AI presence for suppliers
A working definition, why it matters in 2026 procurement, and the levers a B2B supplier can pull to improve it.
What "AI presence" actually means
AI presence is the answer a large language model gives when a buyer asks about your company. It is what the model says when a sourcing director types "is Shenzhen Bright Electronics a reliable supplier?" into ChatGPT, or when a procurement automation asks Claude to surface "top three electronics manufacturers in Guangdong with CE marking." Two distinct components shape that answer: what the model retrieved during training, and what the model retrieves at inference time when it has web access.
For most B2B suppliers in 2026, the training cutoff is the more important of the two. Models like GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and Gemini have indexed enormous stretches of the public web, and they encoded factual claims about hundreds of thousands of suppliers along the way. A supplier whose website was crawlable and who had third-party references at the time of training is now legible to those models. A supplier whose only digital footprint is a brochure-style site behind a JavaScript wall is, for practical purposes, invisible.
Why it matters now
Procurement teams have always used search to triage suppliers, but the workflow has changed shape. Two-thirds of category managers we have spoken with describe a new first step: paste the supplier name into an AI assistant, scan whatever it returns, and use that read to prioritize which RFQs to even send out. The traditional supplier directory has not gone away, but it has become the second stop, not the first.
That shift puts a sharp price on AI presence. A supplier with Strong Signal gets a full, factual write-up across all four major LLMs and shows up in category recommendation lists. A supplier with Dark Signal gets either nothing back, or (worse) a model that confidently confuses them with a competitor. In a competitive category where two suppliers are otherwise comparable, the AI surface is now the tiebreaker.
What AI engines actually look at
Inference-time retrieval (ChatGPT browsing, Perplexity search, Claude with web tools) reads roughly the same surfaces a careful human researcher would: your website, your LinkedIn, trade directories like Made-in-China and Global Sources, news mentions, and the supplier-side hubs that aggregate verified data. The model then compresses what it finds into a one-paragraph answer. The compression step is where most suppliers lose ground: if the website is thin, the LinkedIn is empty, and the directory listings are inconsistent, the model produces a thin paragraph.
Training-time signals are more nuanced. The model has already seen and compressed whatever was online at the cutoff. What it surfaces depends on how many independent sources mentioned you, how consistent those mentions were, and whether the mentions include the structured cues (Organization schema, machine-readable certifications, export country lists) that the model could weight reliably. A single brochure website is not enough; a website plus a LinkedIn plus two directory listings is.
The five practical levers
Most of what suppliers can change falls into five buckets. They are ordered by ratio of effort to score lift in our data so far.
1. Make your website machine-readable
Open Graph tags, Twitter card tags, and Schema.org Organization markup are the three signals AI engines reliably pick up. They take about an hour to add and they move the Digital Footprint score noticeably. If you can also publish a clean sitemap.xml and a robots.txt that allows ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended, you have closed the major gap that most B2B sites have. Implementation: ask your developer to add the three tag families to your homepage and your top-level category pages.
2. Publish a detailed product catalog
"We make precision-machined parts" tells a model nothing. "We make CNC-machined stainless steel components for medical-device housings, ISO 13485 certified, with HS code 8482" tells a model enough to actually surface you in the right buyer queries. The Product Clarity dimension on Signal is the single most adjustable of the five; a well-structured catalog page with specific products, materials, tolerances, certifications, and HS codes typically moves it 20 to 30 points.
3. Publish certification proof
AI engines will report your certifications if and only if they can find them on a crawlable page. A scanned PDF behind a contact form is invisible. A page titled "Certifications" with the issuer, the certificate number, and the issue date for each cert is what the model needs. Suppliers we work with who add this page see Buyer Trust climb between 12 and 25 points within two refresh cycles, because the certifications stop being phantom claims and start being verified citations.
4. Make sure independent sources agree
AI engines penalize inconsistency. If your website says you have been operating since 1998 and your LinkedIn says since 2003, the model will either hedge or pick one at random; either outcome hurts Identity & Presence. Worse, if a customs-data aggregator and a marketplace listing disagree on your country of origin, the model will sometimes split the difference and describe you as based in two places. Spend an hour reconciling: same founding year, same address, same legal name across your website, LinkedIn, and the three or four directories you appear on.
5. Get cited in places the model trusts
This is the slow lever. AI Recommendation Rate moves when independent third-party sources reference you in the same paragraph as your product category. A guest post on a trade publication, an industry-association membership listing, a Made-in-China "Verified Supplier" badge, a Wikipedia-eligible entry: each of these adds an independent reference that the model can use to triangulate. None of these come for free, but they compound. Suppliers who invest steadily in third-party references see AI Recommendation drift up by 5 to 10 points per quarter.
What does NOT move the score
Paid advertising does not. Spending money on Google Ads or LinkedIn Ads has almost no measurable impact on AI presence because the model doesn't see paid placements the way a human user does. SEO keyword stuffing does not, for the same reason; the model has been trained on enough spam to weight it down. Buying badges from illegitimate certification bodies actively hurts, because the model will sometimes flag the supplier as suspect when it sees claims it cannot triangulate.
One commonly-cited tactic also fails to move the score: directly asking the AI to include your company in its training. Models do not learn from individual user sessions. They learn from the public web during training cycles. The only way to "get into the model" is to be visible on the public web at the next training run.
How to track progress
Refresh your Signal Score monthly during the active improvement window. Most of the levers above show up in a single refresh cycle; certifications and third-party references can take two cycles because the model has to re-retrieve when it next runs an audit. Watch the dimension breakdown, not just the total: a 4-point bump in total can hide a 20-point swing in two opposing dimensions, which tells you which lever is actually working.
Suppliers who claim their Signal page get a per-LLM breakdown that shows which specific model is missing which specific fact. That is the most actionable view of the data, because the fix is usually a single content change rather than a wholesale site redesign.
When to stop
A Strong Signal score (80 to 100) is the ceiling that matters. Beyond it, additional effort produces diminishing returns; the model already knows you, already describes you accurately, and already recommends you. Suppliers in that band tend to stop optimizing for AI presence specifically and shift focus to converting the inbound interest into RFQs and orders. That is the right trade-off: Signal is a funnel, not an end state.
